Dear CURF Friends and Family: As the new Executive Director for CURF, I am delighted to welcome you home to Penn! I hope you all have had wonderful summers and are ready to embark on the wonders that await you in the 2019-20 academic year. We in CURF look forward to being your partners in navigating new and engaging opportunities to grow intellectually, civically, and socially this year. I hope to meet you all at our annual CURF Research Expo on September 11, from 5:00-6:30 pm in the Hall of Flags. The Expo features the summer research of over 300 Penn undergraduates who worked with faculty in all 12 Penn schools. I know that you have all been given advice from a myriad of sources on how to make the most of your college experience. Here, I will share my reflections about navigating four years at Penn. Enjoy!

Forty-one Penn students and alumni have been awarded the prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. These students and alumni were selected from over 12,000 applications nationwide. We congratulate these students, who have demonstrated exemplary commitment to their research, as well as the faculty mentors who have provided them with guidance and support along the way.

Alison and Ben, Yenching recipients

Two alumni of the University of Pennsylvania, Alison McFarland (COL ’18) and Ben Griffiths (COL/WH ’17), have been selected as Yenching Scholars in the fifth cohort at the Yenching Academy of Peking University, the second and third from Penn since the program’s inception. They will join approximately 125 outstanding young scholars from more than 40 countries to enroll in an interdisciplinary master’s program in China Studies this September.

Four recipients of the Goldwater Scholarship

Three juniors and one sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania have been selected as Goldwater Scholars by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation, which provides scholarships of as much as $7,500 to undergraduate students interested in research careers in the natural sciences, math, or engineering.

Luis is a 2018 recipient of the Hassenfeld Foundation Social Impact Research Grant and Ruth Marcus Kanter College Alumni Society Undergraduate Research Grant. With CURF’s support, he researched challenges Philadelphians face when seeking and obtaining legal assistance. He is majoring in Sociology and Political Science and completed this project as part of his senior thesis.

In January 2018, Kevin Chen was awarded a Churchill Scholarship. When the Churchill Foundation called, he thought they called the wrong Kevin. And so began Kevin’s journey to England. This case study reports his findings and lessons learned during his time in the land of fish and chips.

Two Penn juniors, Louis Lin and Ángel Ortiz-Siberón, have received Harry S. Truman Scholarships, a merit-based award of as much as $30,000 for graduate or professional school to prepare for careers in government or public service.

2019 PEP and PIP recipients

University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann today announced the recipients of the 2019 President’s Engagement Prize and President’s Innovation Prize. Awarded annually, the Prizes empower Penn students to design and undertake post-graduation projects that make a positive, lasting difference in the world. Each Prize-winning project will receive $100,000, as well as a $50,000 living stipend per team member.

Penn junior Christina Steele has been awarded a Beinecke Scholarship to pursue her graduate education. She is the 12th Beinecke Scholar from Penn since the award was first given in 1975.

On March 22nd, BFS students were treated to a tour of the Penn Museum's Middle East Galleries by Dr. Philip Jones, Associate Curator and Keeper of Collections, followed by a dinner at Manakeesh, an acclaimed West Philadelphia Lebanese Restaurant. The event was the first to be planned by the new BFS Arts & Culture Committee.

Lea has been involved in research activities through CURF and elsewhere since her first year, an entire alphabet soup of PURM, SHIP, J4J, an LGBTQ & Gender Studies Undergraduate Grant, and now a Wolf Humanities Center Undergraduate Fellow. She's also majoring in Health and Societies and minoring in both Gender, Sexuality, & Women's Studies and Italian Studies. She sat down in our office to talk about that path earlier this year.

Seven University of Pennsylvania seniors and a 2018 graduate have each won a Thouron Award to pursue graduate studies in the United Kingdom. Each scholarship winner receives tuition and stipends for as long as two years to earn a graduate degree there. The 2019 Penn Thouron Scholars are: Sona Dadhania, Nicholas Escobar, Nick Joyner, Carson Kahoe, Ryan Leone, Krishna Patel, Libby Rockaway, and Hannah Sweeney.

The University of Pennsylvania is proud to be included again on the list of U.S. colleges and universities that produced the most 2018-2019 Fulbright U.S. Students recently announced by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program. Top-producing institutions are highlighted annually in The Chronicle of Higher Education.
