Mentor Areas

Metabolism, neurobiology, cell biology.

Description:

Our lab studies the roles of families of cytoskeleton-associated proteins in a variety of cellular mechanisms, and their relation to physiology and disease. We are currently focused on understanding how these proteins contribute to metabolic regulation, including their roles in obesity and diabetes, as well as their functions during brain development and in neurological diseases.
We are seeking volunteer rising sophomores or rising juniors to join the lab, starting immediately. We are looking for students who are driven and who have a genuine interest in cell biology research. We expect a commitment of a minimum of four consecutive semesters, which may include summers, and a minimum average of 12 hrs per week. Funding as a full time position to conduct research during the summer may be available. Research can also be conducted for course credit during the fall and the spring semesters. The student will be intensively trained by senior lab members to work independently in the assigned project(s). We expect this to be both a meaningful and a valuable experience for the students. Therefore, in addition to the research training, we will mentor the students to successfully compete for scholarships, participate in local and national research conferences, and apply to graduate school or alternative career choices.
This is an excellent position for students considering graduate school in biological sciences, including medical school! The Lorenzo lab has a strong record of mentoring undergrads. Our undergrad and postbac alumni have gone on to enroll in competitive PhD, MD, and MD-PhD programs at Stanford, Johns Hopkins, Duke, The Mayo Clinic, UCLA, U Michigan, Emory, and UNC. They have won prestigious fellowships and are authors in our publications. Our lab is a diverse and welcoming space that values the diversity of its members in its broadest definition.
To apply, please contact Dr. Damaris Lorenzo (damaris.lorenzo@pennmedicine.upenn.edu) and include your 1) resume, 2) a current copy of your transcript and 3) a brief statement of why you would like to participate in research including postgraduation plans.
