Gabriel Gonsalves Bertho
My research interests are in the field of environmental engineering, especially in the development of sustainable technologies that have applications in water treatment and water desalination. In a research internship at the IIEGA institute, in Brazil, I have researched the development of a biological water desalination method based on microorganisms that can efficiently absorb salt when they form biofilms in coconut fibers. In the summer of 2021, I also conducted independent research at APTA – SP/Brazil in the development of a low-cost lake restoration method. I’m currently a research assistant mentored by Dr. Perez-Rodriguez in the Geomicrobiology laboratory at Penn studying chemosynthetic microorganisms from ocean crust environments.
