Churchill Scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship is to enable outstanding American students (generally with a GPA of 3.90 or higher) to complete one year of graduate study in engineering, mathematics, and science at Churchill College, University of Cambridge.  The Scholarship covers all fees and provides a living stipend, transport, and travel and research grants.

Penn Deadline:  October 8, 2018 (Churchill applicants must separately apply to Cambridge no later than the US Gates Cambridge Deadline. Churchill applicants must list Churchill College as their first choice college on their Cambridge application in order to be considered for the Churchill)

Penn’s Application Process

The Churchill Scholarship accepts nominations from institutions – students may not apply independently. To apply to be one of Penn’s nominees (Penn may nominate up to 2 candidates each year), you must complete the following steps by Penn’s Internal Deadline of October 8, 2018.

  • Carefully review the instructions at, then Register and Login to the Churchill application at  Complete the application, but DO NOT submit it through the Churchill application system – instead, you will submit a PDF copy of the application as part of your application for Penn endorsement.
  • As soon as you have arranged for letters of recommendation, fill out a CURF Recommendation Request Form for each recommender.  You must download, sign, and give each of your recommenders a copy of the form at  Each of your recommenders must sign the Churchill recommendation form, scan it, and submit it along with your recommendation letter to CURF.  DO NOT request letters of recommendation through the Churchill application system.
  • Complete Penn’s Request for Nomination application form.  Here, you will upload a single PDF which combines your signed (un-submitted) Churchill application, the four requested documents (scholarships, prizes, awards, and other distinctions [1 page], research/employment experience [1 page], proposed program of study essay [1 page], personal statement [up to 2 pages]), a copy of correspondence (email is acceptable) with a laboratory supervisor at Cambridge indicating a willingness to accept you  into his or her laboratory pending a successful application, and your unofficial transcript from Penn InTouch (and other institutions, if relevant).  If you do not receive an email confirming your submission within 4 hours, please IMMEDIATELY email to make sure CURF has received your submission.
  • Nominated students will receive further instructions.
