Carlos Montes

My research project lies the intersection between queerness, nationalism, and sovereignty. Specifically, I am interested in the ways in which queer people and organizations in Puerto Rico conceive themselves as being part of broader “un-national” communities, and by extension, create transnational networks of solidarity. I am also interested in queer performances as forms of political resistance. In the past, I worked with The Center for Puerto Rican Studies (CENTRO) Director Dr. Yarimar Bonilla on a project looking at the historical and contemporary statehood movement in Puerto Rico. I am currently working as a research assistant at CENTRO. My research interests include: Political Anthropology, Caribbean Studies, Colonialisms, Political Economy, Queer performance politics, and Pan-Caribbean politics. Outside the classroom, I work at La Casa Latina, and am part of Onda Latina.
