Reaching out to professors and getting started with research at Penn was initially a daunting experience for me. After many, many attempts, I was finally able to find a lab filled with projects that suited my goals and passions and people I look forward to seeing every day. I could never have come to the place I am today without the continued guidance of upperclassmen.

Since my freshman year, I’ve had the wonderful opportunity of researching under Professor Fusun Ozer at Penn Dental Medicine. My work at the lab primarily involves using wet- and dry-lab techniques to investigate the effects of zeolite clinoptilolite, a porous compound with ion-exchange properties, on the antimicrobial and mechanical properties of restorative dental materials. We recently expanded the scope of our project to explore the therapeutic effects of zeolite as an anti-cancer drug delivery system. I have experience in writing systematic review papers, conducting in vitro experiments, and navigating the BIOL 399/499 independent study research courses. I would love to guide students in these areas by proofreading papers, grant applications, resumés, and more!

Conducting research at Penn has opened new doors for me in ways I could never have previously imagined, and I hope to be able to give as much back to the Penn research community as it is giving to me. I am so excited to use my experience to help other students take the first step towards research at Penn and find a project they are passionate about. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions, and I am looking forward to hearing from you! :)
