With the goal of encouraging and advancing women in the sciences, summer undergraduate fellowship funding of $4,500 per student in the College of Arts & Sciences will be provided for 8-10 week summer research projects under the guidance of faculty mentors in the sciences. Faculty mentors will receive $1,000 to support the associated research program. In addition, the program plans to engage Velay Fellows in enrichment activities to prepare them for graduate study and careers in scientific fields.
To apply, students must submit the materials below via the Velay Fellows Application Form in a pdf formatted file.
- Proposal Essay: In no more than 500 words (excluding a list of references) describe the project you intend to undertake. With whom will you work? What is exciting, new, or valuable about your project? What scientific contribution will it make? What do you plan to do? How do you plan to do it? What are the project’s goals, and why is it important?
- Personal Statement: In no more than 500 words, describe how this project fits with your academic, personal, or career plans for the future, and with your current academic, personal, and career interests and activities.
- Copy of your Penn InTouch Transcript
Make sure that you have requested a letter of recommendation from your intended research mentor acknowledging their support and the relationship (if any) between the proposed work and the mentor’s ongoing research program.
To create a copy of your Penn transcript, go to Penn InTouch and print your transcript to pdf. Print and save each document as a pdf, then create a single pdf file by navigating to Acrobat’s “File -> Create ->Combine Files into a Single PDF” feature.
