General Information

The Summer Scholars Program at the University of Rochester is designed to encourage students from historically underrepresented minority groups in the STEM fields interested in a PhD degree in the Biological or Biomedical Sciences and for students with a potential interest in attending graduate school at the University of Rochester. The Summer Scholars Program is aimed at providing research opportunities in all aspects of Biological or Biomedical Research to undergraduates may be considering applying to graduate (PhD) programs. 

Scholars will engage in 10 weeks of research under the direct supervision of a participating faculty mentor. In addition to research, scholars will participate in research/educational seminars and presentations on graduate school and careers. Social activities and network events will be offered during the program. At the conclusion of the program, scholars will design and present a scientific poster outlining their research.

Eligibility Guidelines

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Current matriculated college sophomore or junior attending a U.S. institution of higher education
  • U.S. citizen, permanent resident alien, undocumented student with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA), or current F1 visa holder at a U.S. college or university
  • Minimum cumulative GPA 3.0
  • demonstrates exceptional promise for success as evidenced by academic and research background and aspirations
  • demonstrates strength of character as evidenced by faculty recommendation letters and personal statement
  • able to commit to a 10-week summer residential research program without interruption

Applicants must additionally meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • can describe how their educational and socio-cultural experiences or geographic background can enhance the diversity and inclusion mission of the School of Medicine & Dentistry
  • can describe their sustained commitment to diversity and inclusion in the academic, professional, or civic realm through their work experience, volunteer engagement, or leadership of student or community organizations in a way that directly contributes to the quality of the intellectual environment of the university;
  • hails from a financially disadvantaged background
  • is a non-native English speaker
  • Is a first-generation four-year college student
  • self-discloses in their application a disability defined as those with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities

Application Details

  • Each applicant must fill out and submit a completed online application.
  • The applicant will be asked to provide names for two recommenders. When the application is submitted, the recommenders will receive an email request asking them to upload a letter of recommendation for the applicant.
  • The applicant will be asked to upload scans of their transcripts as part of the online application. Applicants do not need to mail official transcripts to the program unless specifically requested by a program representative.
