University of Pennsylvania alumnus Drew Hasson, of Dallas, TX, has been named a Yenching Scholar at the Yenching Academy of Peking University. At the Yenching Academy, Hasson will pursue an economics and management concentration to investigate how the rapid proliferation of digital devices across China has stabilized the workforce at the fringe of society.  He will join others in the third cohort of the Yenching Scholarship program during the 2017-2018 academic year enrolled in an English language Master of China Studies program.

Before graduating from Penn in 2014, Hasson majored in East Asian Area studies.  After several culturally immersive experiences across Asia, he developed an aspiration to empower marginalized peoples through information communication technology. He pursued a Fulbright fellowship in rural Borneo to spread connectivity as an educational aid for indigenous students.  He eventually directed the world’s second-largest Fulbright program from Kuala Lumpur. Ultimately hopes to become a leader in the Asian international development community.

Established to promote interdisciplinarity in the study of contemporary China, the Yenching Academy of Peking University aims to shape a new generation of global citizens with a nuanced understanding of China and its role in the world. More information about the Yenching Scholarship is available at https://www.curf.upenn.edu/content/yenching.
