Interest in environmental health and the need for increased research in this field has steadily grown during the past decade. To address this need, the University of Pennsylvania has received an NIEHS award for summer internships for selected undergraduate students (the Short Term Educational Experiences for Research or STEER grant, formally known as the Penn Undergraduate Environmental Health Scholars Program).
The Penn Program for Public Service Internship Program is a 12-week multifaceted summer program that immerses undergraduates in the West Philadelphia-Penn community. Site placements include Agatston Urban Nutrition Initiative and K-8 Summer Programs among others. At the core of the internship is an action-oriented, Academically Based Community Service seminar led by the director of the Netter Center for Community Partnerships, Dr. Ira Harkavy.

Energy Research Undergraduate Laboratory Fellowships places students in paid internships in Science and Engineering at any of several Department of Energy facilities. Many of the participants in the program have decided on a career in science and engineering because of the nature of the experience.
